The United States Congress is scheduled to consider legislation Tuesday that would review Indias defence policy and consider the possibility of deploying additional troops to India, a senior Democrat and an independent House member said.
The legislation would also require India to provide the United States with a detailed account of its counter-terrorism strategy.
The United States has made clear that it does not consider India to be a significant security threat.
But it would be a rare moment of bipartisan cooperation, given the tensions between Washington and Delhi.
India has been accused of being a key player in a regional campaign of terrorism, including the recent assault on Mumbai that killed 166 people.
The bill also would allow the United Nations Security Council to hold additional talks with India.
The Security Council is scheduled for a session later this month.
